The Independent Print Industries Association (IPIA) is excited to announce its next high-profile debate, scheduled for Wednesday, July 9th, at the House of Commons in Westminster. This prestigious event, chaired by Rachel Gilmour MP, Vice President of The Debating Group, will bring together leading figures from the marketing and advertising sectors to discuss the motion: “Campaigns that include print are more effective.” The debate is part of the IPIA’s broader strategic campaign, A New Narrative for Print, which aims to reposition print as a vital component of modern communications.

The debate will take place in Committee Room 12, starting promptly at 17:00. Admission is free, but advance registration via Eventbrite is essential to gain access to the House of Commons. Attendees can register at: bit.ly/ipiadebate.

The Panel

The debate will feature a panel of four senior industry professionals, each bringing their expertise and perspectives to the discussion. The panelists are divided into two teams, one arguing in favor of the motion and the other challenging it.

Speaking in favor of the motion are:

  • Angus George, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy UK and Co-Creative Lead at Ogilvy One UK.
  • Gemma Greaves, Founder of Nurture, a network for marketing and communications leaders.

Arguing against the motion are:

  • Missy Clements, Client Experience Director at 7DOTS, a creative agency specializing in digital and social media.
  • Ellie Hale, Partnerships Director at Reflect Digital and Founder of AgencyLand, a platform for agency professionals.

The event will be chaired by Rachel Gilmour MP, who was elected in the 2024 General Election as the Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Minehead. Gilmour brings a wealth of experience in strategic communications, having held senior roles such as Director of Communications at the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), Head of Strategy at the Environment Agency, and Director of Communications at Pangea21. Her political career began in 1995 as a local councillor, and she has since established herself as a respected voice in public policy and communication strategy.

A Thought-Provoking Discussion

The debate promises to be a lively and engaging discussion, exploring the role of print in modern integrated campaigns. The panelists will delve into key themes such as creativity, emotional impact, and measurable results, weighing the strengths and limitations of print compared to digital media. The event aims to challenge conventional wisdom and spark fresh thinking about the value of print in an increasingly digital world.

After the debate, attendees are invited to continue the conversation at a networking reception with drinks and food at the nearby Westminster Arms. This informal gathering provides an opportunity for attendees to connect with industry peers and share insights from the discussion.

A New Narrative for Print

This debate is a key component of the IPIA’s long-term strategic campaign, A New Narrative for Print, which was launched in 2024. The campaign seeks to raise awareness of print’s vital role in both consumer and B2B communications, particularly in marketing, advertising, and media. Backed by in-depth research from leading strategic consultancy Madano, the campaign aims to challenge outdated perceptions of print and present compelling evidence of its effectiveness in driving engagement and achieving results.

The IPIA’s research highlights how print continues to deliver significant value in a multi-channel environment. By providing marketers with data-driven insights, the campaign aims to reposition print as a dynamic and results-driven medium that complements digital strategies. The debate on July 9th is an opportunity to showcase these findings and stimulate a broader conversation about the future of print in the marketing mix.

Why This Debate Matters

In an era dominated by digital media, print has often been overlooked or dismissed as outdated. However, recent studies and case studies demonstrate that print remains a powerful tool for capturing attention, building trust, and driving action. This debate will explore whether campaigns that incorporate print achieve greater effectiveness compared to those that rely solely on digital channels.

By bringing together diverse perspectives from the creative, strategic, and client-facing sides of the industry, the event aims to provide a balanced and nuanced discussion. Whether you’re a marketer, advertiser, or communications professional, this debate offers valuable insights into the evolving role of print in a rapidly changing media landscape.
